‘A strong, character-driven YA novel. A FINALIST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Awards

“The time has come to put some stories straight. I’ve waited long enough. I can’t deny it would be good to get some things off my chest.
There have been a lot of rumours about me. There have been even more about Dion. A whole industry sprung up after his death; articles, books, websites ...
None of them can explain Dion Was he a myth? - Or merely a man? Everyone seems to have a ‘true story’ about him. But whose truth is it? It certainly wasn’t his.
Now it’s time to reveal Dion’s life … and mine.”

Ariadne has had an eventful life.
Brought up on the beautiful island of Crete, along with her three siblings; the acclaimed Andro, the condemned Aster and the conniving Phaedra, Ariadne longs for freedom from their tyrannical father, King Minos.
The arrival of Theseus, Prince of Athens, offers her an opportunity to escape which leads her to the love of her life, Dionysus, the misunderstood singer of the alternative band, Libertia.
Behind the endless press attention surrounding this beautiful grunge-rock god, who is worshipped by young fans, Ariadne discovers a vulnerable, troubled and talented young musician who craves his estranged family’s acceptance. However, the manipulation and misunderstanding, of others, thwart Dion’s desire to use his god-given gifts to make the world happy. Ariadne is forced to watch as tragedy unfolds.

In this inventive retelling of the myths of Dionysus and Ariadne, which places them in a timeless, modern world, you see both sides of the story, question fact and fiction and ultimately contemplate our continued fascination with the myth of celebrity.

I just finished reading Dion and am unusually compelled to write a review. I read a ton of books, mostly light-hearted YA so they fly by even with all of life's interruptions in between, but Dion made me slow down and think about the story that was being told. Not accustomed to picking books with tragedy in mind - and please note that where I love/appreciate history and understand that most of what makes news headlines, in both today's time and from historians of old, are generally tragic incidents - I headed into Dion with blinders on.
The tone of the narrator (for that's what she is, she doesn't portray herself in any way as a 'heroine' of the story) is sad and reminiscent at all times, as if she really is telling her story just to you. The characters are very well developed, the places they visit and people they meet are realistic...but then that may be because I have studied Greco-Roman mythology as well as the artwork of the time (look up "The Toreador" fresco from Crete, always was one of my favorites). Which brings me to a new appreciation for these characters; they have been resurrected, given a new spin that correlates with our lives today and where they were originally created hundreds of years ago, they have been given new life and feel as if we're hearing their story for the first time. As I always like to say, "There's nothing new in the world today" and this telling of Dion (aka: Dionysus or the god of the grape harvest) exemplifies that in a well written, well thought out story. If you have an interest in mythology, or are simply looking for a well told story that offers more than face value, check this book out!

Interesting modern turn to mythological stories. Well written and enjoyable read, which starts and ends unexpectedly, but great story. Worth reading.
There is the most amazing sense while reading this book that it is taking place in mythical times and yet totally current. The two blend together as if they are one and the same. I felt as though I was sitting comfortably in a quiet room in Ariadnes' home as she told me the story of her life, and the life of Dion. The newspaper articles, so cleverly written, brought a sense of realness and made me feel that she had opened her scrapbook to support the stories she told. She developed clear pictures of each character but somehow managed to keep a mysterious aura around Dion. I was able to visualize the surroundings in all of her settings. I am not well schooled in Greek mythology and may have understood more in the book if I was, but it didn't matter. The story was clear and interesting and although I am much older than the obvious audience for this book I would recommend it to anyone. Great story Sarah!
